Waterperry House & Nanpantan

The School has two magnificent country houses which all students in the UK Branch Schools, the head School in London as well as other associated Schools around the world are invited to attend for either weekend or week-long study residentials. The quiet and peaceful atmospheres of both houses are particularly conducive to enhancing the philosophical and other studies which students engage in on regular weekly group meetings.

Waterperry House

Many short retreats are now available at the School’s Waterperry House near Oxford. They are open to all students in the school together with friends and family. Click here for details.

The house is set in spacious grounds that comprise beautiful gardens, a garden centre, a teashop, a farm shop, a church and several cottages. Click here to go to the Waterperry Gardens website.

Inside the house are numerous works of art, all produced by artists and sculptors who are, or have been, students in the School. The ‘Artists’ Hall’ is richly decorated with marvellous frescoes in which each one depicts a meaningful philosophical story.

Nanpantan Hall

Like Waterperry House, students meet at Nanpantan Hall from all over the UK for either weekend or week-long periods of study, work, meditation and reflection.

It is a Victorian house set in beautiful grounds with expansive views and is an ideal place for quiet and contemplative philosophical studies.

Frequently asked questions

What does ‘Practical Philosophy’ mean?

The course is practical in the sense that it takes philosophical ideas and shows how they can be of direct use in our everyday lives. The intention is to stimulate enquiry and through this expand the way we look at the world and ourselves.

How do I register for the course?

Online by selecting the course and location you wish to enrol on, add to cart and then checkout. Alternatively you can email [email protected]

If you register online, you will receive a confirmation email with your receipt and the start date of the course for your first days attendance. If you register by any means other than online, you will receive a receipt confirming your registration.

Do I need previous experience?

No, all you need is an open and enquiring mind. The course is intended for everyone, regardless of education, occupation, race, political or religious belief.

How do I attend a course?

First you need to enrol on a course. The in-person courses are available in Chichester, Poole and Southampton. Local maps can be found on this page. Other local venues are also available up and down the UK.
